Internal Marketing Strategies in the Pharmaceutical Industry: A Systematic Review and Integrative Framework for Employee Engagement and Organisational Performance
Abstract
In the pharmaceutical sector, internal marketing strategies can play a significant role in ensuring that employee engagement aligns with the company's goals. The objective of this systematic review was to identify, categorise and evaluate the internal marketing strategies used by pharmaceutical companies, how they are applied internally and the likely effect on organisational outcomes. A systematic review of the literature was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, BioMed Central, PLOS, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and JSTor databases published in the last 15 years (from 2011 to 2026). This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and 43 studies were included in the final analysis. The identified strategies were organised into a five-dimensional framework: employee rewards and engagement, workplace environment, support and culture, leadership strategies, HR systems and support, and training, development, and capacity building. These dimensions all interrelate with internal marketing practices, employee engagement, employee retention, service quality and organisational performance. This systematic review suggest that effective internal marketing strategies within pharmaceutical companies needs to be holistic and contextually relevant, integrating employee-focused practices with business performance objectives. The identified framework should serve as a guide for pharmaceutical companies in developing integrated in-house marketing strategies that incorporate rewards, culture, leadership support, HR support, and ongoing training. This classification needs to be reviewed, tested, and adapted across various pharmaceutical environments, especially in LMICs, where resource scarcity, workforce insecurity, and delayed payments may affect the success of these strategies.
