The Role of Postmodern Avant-Gard Narrative Experimentation in Creating the Theme of Cultural Transformation in Thomas Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge

Abstract

This study attempts to explore the thematic significance of postmodern experimental narrative in Thomas Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge. It focuses on Pynchon’s innovative and creative use of storytelling techniques, like the narrative point of view, characters, textual description, and setting to develop the theme of cultural transformation. These techniques will be interpretive as being experimental i.e., they are not created by the traditional composition of literary works. Instead, they will be perceived as being avant-garde as they reflect the authorial perception of cultural transformation at critical times. Therefore, the study’s methodology will be qualitative concentrating on the literary techniques that are the core of the novel. Furthermore, it follows a textual analysis of the narrative point of view, characters, textual description, and setting to reveal Pynchon’s realistic depiction of contemporary cultural transformation through fictional events. The study applies a narrative theory to unravel the role of postmodern narrative experimentation in creating thematic layers within fictional plots.
